You would think that they would deal with reputable breeders.

Yes I know "ost" is not a word. I guess my C didn't go through, sorry I offended some okay. I have no intention of buying from a pet store I just happened to see a pet store in a mall the other day that sold them, I was shocked because I haven't been in one for awhile that actually sold them. As well how can a breeder possibly know what goes on in a home. Some of you say breeders wouldn't send their dogs off with just anyone, however you can't tell who is going to abuse or neglect their pet just by meeting them a couple of times. No one knows what goes on in other peoples homes behind closed doors. Thanks for the responses.

pet stores want to make profit - they buy cheap and mark up 300%
they do not deal with reputable breeders because reputable breeders would NEVER NEVER sell to a pet store - reputable breeders dont need to hide behind pet stores - reputable breeders want to promote themself and screen new owners and offer GOOD advice, a reputable breeder will talk you out of a dog not suited for you.. a pet store will talk you into a sale
they are unhealthy because they come from low quality (puppy mill) places, the genetics of the parents is poor (or the breeder would be selling directly to the public) and the pups do not receive much mental stimulation either before or during their stay in the store
people need to STOP supporting pet stores - even if the store says the dogs come from good breeders - logically people should know this isnt true
pet stores are unethical - they exploit pets for profit (a very few adopt pets out for local shelters but some actually charge the shelter for doing this)
they cost so much because the pet store is a STORE it wants to make money
you can be sure pets in stores are over priced and lower quality than from a breeder

Dog breeders or puppy mills are usually dirty and when they sell to pet stores they dont care they just want there money, for instance a schnauzer would cost about $250.00 from a breeder then they sell it to a pet store , the pet store charges 400.00 or more. And half the time the pet store does not even know the conditions of where the puppies came from. So sad! There should be more restrictions on dog breeders some are only in it for the money not the well being of the dog.If you want to purchase a puppy look in your paper or on-line for a private breeder, go to the place were the puppy was raised see conditions and also the moma & daddy of the puppies to make sure you are getting a clean healthy animal and also a good bloodline, so much inner breeding. Best thing is to go to your local shelter and adopt a puppy who has been let down by some human some where .

NEVER buy a puppy from a pet store - they are puppy mills that breed puppies just for money. Often times if you research the pedigree that the store provides the breeders listed don't even exist. They are unhealthy because of poor breeding and probably even inbreeding. They can charge a lot because they are pure bread but improper breeding matches leave the puppies with the health issues you mentioned. You are better off getting a puppy from a shelter or a reputable breeder that's not associated with any pet shops. The only way to stop puppy mills is to stop buying from them.

Think anout this: would an adoption agency put a price on children & sell them to whoever had the right amount of money? NO reputable breeder would do the same with the pups they have put so much into! They have tested the parents for genetic diseases, many have shown tem to championship titles, and they want to interview prospective owners to get a feel for them: if they would be owners, if this breed suits them & their lifestyle, and which pup's personality would fit them best. It is not about money to repuatble breeders - they pour their heart & sould into the love of their breed & want only the best for the dogs they bring into this world. Most will take the dog back if the owner gets divorced, transfered, etc, and needs to let the dog go. That is what is called being responsible. Pet stores (AKA puppy mill outlets) and backyard breeders care only that your check clears.

Reputable breeders would NEVER sell to a pet store. Caring breeders have invested a lot of time and love into their puppies and want to make sure that they go to the RIGHT homes, not just to whoever comes along with money. Good breeders turn away more potential homes than they sell to.
Puppies in a pet store are simply commodities to be sold to whoever wants to buy them.

There are so many unhealthy pups because they are bred by people looking to maximize profit at any cost. They know that the public doesn't know (or care) that their dogs aren't worth what they are selling them for and they can take advantage of people.
The pups end up being unhealthy because the people are breeding them just to be healthy enough to live past the healthy guarantee period. If they actually took the parents to the vet and got them checked for genetic disorders or got the mom certified as having good hips, the BYB would lose money! Why would they do this knowing they can sell the pup w/o vet care?
NO good breeder is going to sell their pups to a pet store. This is partly because a good breeder will want to know where its puppies are going. If your dog that you loved had puppies wouldn't you want to guarentee that they get a home for life? if my dog had puppies (though she is spayed) I would want everyone of them to go to homes where I knew they would be loved and not left outside of get kicked around by little kids or allowed to be hit by a car.
Who wouldn't want that cute puppy staring at them from behind the glass? The puppy LOOKS healthy, especially when the people don't know what to look for as far as health. Also many people think that a dog living to be 7 or 8 is good, when in reality healthy dogs can live to be 14 - 20!

Many puppies at the pet store come from puppy mills, that produce mass amounts of puppies.
They cost more because the pet store has the puppies shipped to the store from many different states.
So instead of you going out and getting a puppy for less (and driving to get it), the pet store charges you for the distance the puppy came.
If you want a puppy, just go and get one from a breeder. You save more in the long run health wise.

Please do not even consider buying a dog in a pet store. If you must have a pure breed consider finding a reputable breeder. Pet stores get puppies from puppy mills. Dogs are mistreated, underfed, and often in bread. Inbreeding causes many health problems in animals. You will find those problems in many of the popular dogs.

DON'T BUY A DOG IN A PET STORE! Pet stores don't care for the dogs as they should and those that do try to sell them for crazy prices even when they are not sure of the breed. jeesh... go to your local humane society or check out breeders in your area.. most dogs wont be cheap but at least you know what your getting and they will be healthy.

i work at a pet store, and we don't have dogs for that reason. dogs need 100% attention in pet stores they can't give them that. serious dog enthusiast will only buy from reputable breeders, a breeder knows they are healthy they know they dam/sire and the bloodlines of the pups. and they are sure to be socialized at least a little.
