Some airlines like BA now have chip and pin payment systems on aircraft, but have no internet or other commercial communications to ground, so how does it verify the pin? is the pin stored on the card, or just part of it? on a ferry recently they had a chip/pin terminal and I asked how it worked and they said it had a mobile phone built in, but surely that's not true for the plane.

The sale data is then stored within the payment system until it can be connected or wirelessly transmitted to the network.

I dont know for certain, but you can use the built in phones on a plane (they are more common in 1st class) so perhaps it uses them?
