I have recently had first hand experience of a NGO in Indonesia (community guidelines do not allow me to name them unfortunately) that exploited a sick baby, that later died, by taking it on demonstrations, persuading the parents not to accept the free medical help offered in order to boost its international profile to secure funds from USAID and the Norwegian government.
They also only fight multinational companies in developing countries, even when these companies are knowingly innocent of any wrong doing confirmed by various international bodies, rather than confronting actual local perpetrators of wrong doings as this does not get them any international coverage- thus future funding.
Can we really trust them when their number one objective is to secure funding at all costs?
