This started about a month ago. Sometimes she can be easily rocked back to sleep and other times she's hysterical for over an hour. She's always been a pretty good sleeper....would wake for a bottle in the middle of the night then go right back to sleep. I'm lost as to why she is so hysterical. She has no health problems, eats well, naps well during the day....any ideas on what to do or how to handle. I've tried different methods but truthfully I'm not very consistent when we try something new because I'm always concerned it's not the right thing to do so I just hug her and rock her until she cries herself to sleep.

Your daughter may have what is known as "night terrors". It is almost like sleeping walking, but it is more dramatic. If this is the case, you shouldn't try to wake her up suddenly, as she may think you are trying to attack her. When you are hugging her and rocking her, is she allowing you to? By this I mean is she relaxed in your arms, or is she stiff? The most likely source would be a sleep deprivation. Which it may surprise you that she has, but if she is waking up every night, she would have it. Most adults do and don't even know it. You also may want to consider nightmares, which doesn't necassarily mean she is dreaming about anything in particular, just has a feeling of being scared. If one of you went back to work recently, or she has had a drastic change in her people enviroment, it could also be seperation anxiety, or even a developmental leap such as a growth spurt or something like that. If I were you, I would talk to her doctor, and let him know that it is starting to scare you. We always have to go off of the instincts of being a mommy.....Because normally, they are right on head. God gave us that specail "power". Also, I would like you to know that I have three kids, ages 12, 9, and 8, ALL three of them used to wake up like this when they were babies, up until about the age of six or so. And, come to find out, it was growth spurts. Their legs hurt, so bad that they would cramp and wake them out of a sound sleep. That also may want to be something you discuss with your doctor. I hope that this helped you at least somewhat understand some of the things that it may be. Good luck and God bless. I hope she feels better soon. :)

has some kind of change occured in the last month such a custody dispute?,divorce ,day care sittuation? You need to think about this and carefully consider anything that might have upset her schedule. or any place she goes where she is not comfortable.children do not act this way unless something is going on in their life she needs to be seen by a physician and let him/her evaluate her and then go from there . Good luck and I hope this helps.

My son had these when he was little. They call them night terrors but they can be caused by an infection. My son had alot of ear infections when he was little but they can be caused by other infections in the body also. I would take her to the doctor and get her checked out just in case. His night terrors would scare me to death. He would wake up and scream for me even if I was there holding him. I know its scary. Just have her checked out by her pediatrician. Good Luck

It sounds like you're doing what you can do. She may be having night terrors (really bad dreams) My son went through that, or I've heard kids grow at night, maybe it's hurting her. i would talk to her pediatrician. He/She may tell you to give her some Ibuprofen at bed time to prevent the pain.

There's something wrong here. Something happened to her to cause this new and disturbing behavior. Start thinking. Who has been around her, when you're not?
