I'd agree Cyclops...

Leaking of classified material is a criminal act.

In cases where the leaks are proven to be a detriment of our national security I believe they should be charged with treason and forced to stand trial with a jury of their peers deciding ther guilt or innocense, If they are convicted they should be stripped of their citizenship and deported to a country of the juries choosing never being allowed to return to the United States.

Because "leaks" are a grey area. You'd be stunned how many of the politicians scream about leaks that they actually authorized. It's all a game. The military leaks too. Keep in mind, the rules for classifying information are pretty loose, and sometimes they're abused.

If you're asking about Plame - keep in mind she was no longer an operative when they leaked her name. That little situation is more politics than security.

Leaking information that is classified is important for the public to get an understanding of the workings of our government. This administration is highly secretive about things that we have a right to know. Most leaks do not directly hurt our national security initiatives. There have been many important leaks historically that have stopped our government from engaging in wrongful activity. I believe Daniel Ellsburg and Deep Throat are American heros.

Many of those do so with the strong feeling that they are "whistle blowing" and that this is a public service, done in the context of civil disobedience. Had MLK not decided on civil disobedience to redress his grievances, it would be a quite different world.

Too much information is classified as a coverup for wrongdoing. Someone has to expose the crooks in our government. I didn't vote for many of them so I don't automatically assume they have honorable intentions.
