They are at war, trees get "choked out" by weeds, (a plant, different Species) and are in competition, just as we are in competition for dominance, they are in competition as well

Ah .. a good Tolkien question! I will suggest that being long-lived, the trees have seen the futility of war and hate so consciously chosen to not participate.

Some plants make the ground around them all but imposable for another plant to grow!

Well it could be sort of difficult to take up arms if you have none. And the whole concept of marching into battle would be lost on them since they are sort of rooted in one spot. Now I have seen a pine tree smite another one on the head in a heavy windstorm.

you are wrong, war among plants is a fact, they fight about sunlight and water, they prevent the young from growing in their shade.
they war, but very slowly and quietly.
