The sources of soil pollution are many.
The overuse of herbicides and pesticides and chemical fertilizers in agriculture are some of the worst.
Industrial wastes are also a problem. This is what lead to the problems at "Love Canal" and other locations.
Proper disposal of human and animal watses are also problems. Landfills are often associated with soil pollution.

Proper drainage. Proper irrigation. Look up things on storm grates even. Obviously not littering would be one way to prevent. i tried to think of things maybe you haven't. Hope I'm helping. Underground pipelines. Or above-ground pipe lines. Look at that huge oil spill a few weeks ago and what that did to the environment! I'm running out of ideas. Best of luck to you!
