Why don't you do some travelling and sort it out...first around Ireland and then maybe to England...New York is in a different country and its huge to move out of your home country...figure out why you want to move, don't do it for emotional reasons, there has got to be a way to find other living arrangements and other jobs if necessary right in Ireland? You can't run away from your problems, you will still be taking yourself and them with you until you resolve them...I can tell you NYC is very expensive and I don't know what your situation is but you might find yourself homesick, broke, with no place to stay or staying in some unsafe, nasty place...wishing you had never left...beside you are still young have your whole life ahead of you...finish training and figure out yourself and what you want and when you are older and clearer if you still want to go and have the resources...then go to New York City....good luck.

Live in NYC...22 years old i've been in NY all my life. You can look up roommate finder services in NYC that will inform you of people seeking a roomate so you have some where to live. As far as a job search goes...it is competitive so you may end up doing something out of your career feild of expertice for a while...however if you are really dedicated you'll survive (with very little money at first...)and I would recommend it to anyone...its a great place to learn about yourself and others...even when I don't have a dollar in my pocket I can grab a friend, walk around, and people watch...or take a book and sit in the park and read...best of luck!
LoL o yea...i live in an appartment with my friend...no parents....money is tight but I promise it can be done.

I think travel at your age is a great idea - good for broadening one's horisons. However, it might be a good idea to finish your chef training (if you are indeed still in training), so that you are qualified to earn a living as a chef from day one.
New York IS expensive. Would you consider perhaps opting for another city in the US? If New York is all that you want, I'd say go for it!! Dream big! Do enough research beforehand though to ascertain what level income you'd need to earn in order to survive.
Check out http://www.43things.com/things/view/362 for other young people in your situation who also want to go to NY (scroll way down and read the answers and questions).
Also look at www.wetfeet.com, www.vault.com and www.jobmarket.nytimes.com
These might start you off in the right direction...good luck and happy travels!

New York is shockingly expensive - I heard that you have to hire a broker just to find yourself a place to rent there - I knew someone who was paying $3000 a month for a 400 square foot apartment! If you are dead set on New York, try and find someplace cheaper in the suburbs and commute. It is a very busy place - very crowded. The population density is very high. It may not be what you are expecting.

If you want to view it all and sort things out, New York is a great place.. You can look for apartments to share on Craigslist
There are endless restaurants, you only problem is the lack of a work visa so you would have to find someone who is willing to pay cash
Good luck

i live ten minutes from NYC so I know many people who have worked and lived there. Everything you need or want can be found here. That is where the best paying jobs are the most interesting diverse groups of people. my friend lived alone on the upper east side. he had a studio apt and paid 1200 a month for it.

New York is expensive...I am only 16(live in NY)so i cant tell you how it is to live on your own but i have an older sister and she has tried to get an apt. but it was too expensive even with a roommate...but if you truly want to go, then you should try it out and if it doesnt work out there is always home (right)...Anyways good luck and if things dont work out then maybe it wasnt meant to be..
Good Luck :)

WAY TO EXPENSIVE for a "chef trainee"! This comes from a trained pastry chef that rose through the ranks and hard work!

Don't ever go to America, you'll become stupid as people there. Stay where you are now. You may never realise but there is no place like home.
