There have been blatant examples dealing with rape, slavery, God-promoted killing, and so on from the Old Testament and every time the answer is the same. "That's the Old Testament, we are now in the New Testament." Should we completely throw out the Old Testament then if you don't agree with what it says? Try not to be hypocritical for once in your life and realize that not everything that's said in the bible is healthy to believe in.

Christians need their mistranslated and distorted definitions of certain OT verses (which they insist against all reason and historical accuracy foretell Jesus's messianic appearance), with which they may beat Jews over the head with evangelical zeal.

Also, "suffer not a witch to live" might be revived in the future if those pesky Pagans ever get out of hand.

I think it is important to keep the Old Testament. For example, when we are researching our genealogy and run across a person that was a murderer, do we leave this person out? We could, but then we would be changing history. And history always gives us something to learn from and if the history is bad, maybe we can learn not to repeat it. The main thing about the Old Testament is the genealogy, the encounters with God, the prophecies, and how life was back then. I think there are a lot of things that we can learn from out of the Old Testament. I believe we should live our lives according to the New Testament, but know about our history from the Old Testament and learn from it.

Yes there are atrocities that take place in the old testament, but there are atrocities in the new testament as well. I think what is important to note is that in the New testament there was a savior for those who were victims of such atrocities. And He gave his life so all could be redeemed. From the old Testament forward. You should not take anything away from the bible nor should you add to it. The god-promoted killing was an act of cleansing on His part. A way of judging those who were hard hearted and continuous in their iniquities. After Jesus Came there was no more need for the cleansing because Jesus did that with the shedding of his blood.Perhaps you think it unhealthy to believe the bible, but I say any true and accurate look at history of any peoples or nation will yield atrocities just as bountiful as what you see in the bible. Should you not read any history at all just because of some of the ugliness that took place. Should we forget about the Holocaust because it is unhealthy to believe man could be so despicable to another man. Or the crusades...or whats happening now in the middle east.....or what Saddam Hussein did to his own people?

The Old Testament is there for a purpose. People can't obey God's law without Christ. Look at all the people who screwed up. God is still vengeful and angry about sin. We just have an advocate now. Someone to cover us when we screw up -- Jesus. He took the punishment we deserve. There are many good lessons in the Old Testament to learn, though I do read mainly from the New Testament. Face it -- we still screw up today. Should we throw out or get rid of everyone who isn't perfect? Soon wouldn't be any of us left.

The Old Testament points to Jesus in many respects and prophesied his birth hundreds of years prior, so it provides valuable insights into his nature and being. I'd hate to lose the Psalms, Proverbs or Ecclesiastes that are helpful with insights and examples for living with wisdom. Also, Jesus quoted from the Old Testament so a more clear point of reference can be made because of it. The New Testament is a fulfillment of the Old. Can't imagine throwing out such a resource in that regard.

As a start, it would be a good idea to move the "Old Testament" to the Mythology section. However, I think that "while we're down there," as the surgeon might say, we could use the scalpel on some parts of the New Testament as well. Let's revisit the writings of all those guys who NEVER knew Jesus. e.g., Paul. Who knows, a little reconstructive surgery might result in a coherent, human approach to life.

No, we should appreciate the Old Testament.Because people in the Old Testament prophesied that Jesus would come to earth, be born in a manger, die on the cross, and be ressurected three days later. So no don't throw away the Old Testament should be just as important as the New Testament.

No, we can learn a lot from the Old Testament. But we should also recognize that as Christians, the New Testament is more relevant to us today.

No--the Old Testament is valid and has riches beyond measure. One just has to realize the cultural differences of the people in that time period and read the Bible for what it is intended to be read for--it is not a history book or a literal work of non-fiction in many places. Each book has a different author and a different writing style. Pray to God to guide you in your reading and you will take from your reading what God has meant for you.

That's what supposed to happen in Christianity. The Old Testament was kept as a guide only. But now every christian nutter uses it to validate some weird claim.
