Most items you can bring back accept meat, fresh fruit and veggies. U can bring in candied fruits and those that are picked.
You have a $1500 limit on what you can bring in.

2 places I recommend to shop, Main shopping district there is the oldest food court in an alley in the middle of it excellent food.

The next is on the other side of Tienanmen square other side of the large guard tower, there is an alley to the right that has a large Flea market ( don't be afraid to haggle the prices down or try to play one seller against another, sometime just leaving will bring the price down.

Further down that main street to the left there is a restaurant that is known for the best Peking duck I cannot remember the name but if you ask someone at your hotel they can probably tell you.
Try the Tea eggs with fried bread loaves and hot soy milk.

Make sure to drink only bottled water and carry plenty of it when site seeing. Make sure you use restroom before you go to a restaurant, some do not have public bathrooms due to sanitary reasons. Always carry T.P. and napkins to.

I'm not sure if it's still there because I didn't visit it on my last visit but If you go to the Ming Tomes make sure to take plenty of money, there is a small building oppisite of the entrance that has a Goverment run factory that cuts and makes jewlery from preciuos stones and jade. Bargan prices and you get a certifacate of authenticity.

Shop: at the Xu Xue Jie (Silk Street market) for cheap bargains.
Eat: at local Chinese restaurants for authentic Chinese cuisine. They also have good western restaurants near the Silk Street Market.

Do not miss the Great Wall (1 hour drive aproximately from beijijng), the forbidden city, Tian'men square.

Sanlitun is bar street, if you're interested. There is a north and a south street, both are near each other. There are many areas in which to club as well.

You cannot bring back perishable items, or anything that has to do with birds or their feathers (bird flu, etc.)

I hope this helped a bit!

Things to bring back: Silk garments (they are quite cheap here), Vaccumn-Packed Peking Duck, Pearls

What to eat: Meat-sauce Noodle (very much like speghetti), barbeque mutton kebabs, Cattlefish kebabs, hotpots etc.

Definiteluy not to miss: The Great Wall (go for the HuangCheng greatwall, it is virtually untouched by modern ages), Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, Forbidden City

To prepare: Bring money and apetite. You will need it. In November, the weather is getting cold. If would be wise to bring some warm clothing (not for winter). It would be around 10-20 C.

In addition to US regs about what you cannot bring into the US (foods, etc.) there are some Chinese regs about what you cannot take out of China. If you purchase an antique that is old enough (sorry, I don't remember how old), it may be considered a "cultural artifact" and prohibited from export from China.
