I don't think respect for older drivers is dead. I conditionally respect older drivers. Let me explain.
My grandfather was the greatest man I ever met. One of the reasons why I think he is the greatest man I ever met is because he made a very tough decision at the age of 81.
You see, he loved driving because of the freedom it gave him. But, when he turned 81 he felt as though he may harm himself or others if he continued driving. So, he decided to no longer drive.
This was tough for him in the beginning because of the freedom thing but he became used to it and developed an appreciation and love for walking.
So, I respect older drivers if they are alert and safe on the road. If not, I think they should do some serious soul searching like my grandfather did and make the right decision for both themselves and everyone else on the road. Remember, driving is a privilege not a right.
As for those angry people who shake their fists at you and give you nasty hand signs; just do what my grandfather used to do. Wave and say "have a good day."

Do you live in Florida? I see this sort of thing all the time. The people that live there have to go to work, then you have the Snowbird that is on vacation that is just in a dream state, on the same roadways. Not a good mix. If the snowbird would just stay off the road ,during rush hours, it would be much better. I also know that without the snowbirds the economy would be in sad shape. I think if you are following the rules of the road, and keeping up with the flow of traffic(5-10mph over speed limit) you should have NO more problems.

I am an older driver too. I have been driving, without an accident, for fifty years. The days of "care and courtesy" on the roads as requested on the old blue licence are long gone. Whilst there are some good drivers amongst the young, it seems to be that aggression has set in, especially the drivers of these (unnecessary) four-wheel drive vehicles. Most of them can't handle the off-road car - I was a professional driver when I was working, so I have plenty of experience - as someone once said "if they are called off-road vehicles, why are they allowed on the roads?"
By-the-way, I am a woman driver !!

It is sad. We live in a society that does not revere our elders. My grandparents came from Italy. We were brought up to have nothing but respect and honor for our elders, as they have already lived and learned. What we have yet to experience.
It is sadly a sign of the times. And with the way a lot of people are brought up. Things will not change. I see it as how I would like to be treated when I am older. I wonder if all the 18 year olds etc.. out there, ever think about what it will be like when they get old.

I have found this problem with everyone...They forget the basic rule...Slower traffic move right. OR If you have someone behind you, obviously they are capeable of going faster. This makes you the "Slower traffic". So...Move right.
Depends on your definition of "good driver". A "good driver" goes the speed limit on the freeway in any lane available. The finger comes in to play when the fast lane wants to travel at +10 of the speed limit or more and you are in the way.

If that many people are 'abusing' you, then you must be doing something to deserve it.
Why would anyone respect an older driver? It's not like youngsters giving you their seat on the bus!!
I bet you expect the traffic to part for you like the red sea for moses. Time for a reality check methinks!

If you keep up with traffic and don't cause a hazard then most people will be polite I think...On the other hand I think respect for ANYTHING, even ones self, is dying so it must be sign of the times.

Don't listen to them. Many people get impatient very easily and the only way to take it out is to throw their anger at someone who they think its the reason for the frustration. Just drive normally, you dont need to hear what the have to say. They don't like the way you drive? Simple, change lanes, and pass, thats all they have to do.

No just put an 'I Love You' sticker on the back window of your car..and you'll will soon notice the difference. The more deference we show, the more respect we get back.
Just renew your acquaintance with The Highway Code!
