I mean judging by performance is SP1 really nececessary?

When Microsoft introduces a service pack the newest version will include all the prior service packs. It is not necessary to install SP1; it is already included in SP2.

No! If you have installed service pack 2, there is no need to install service pack one. Service pack 2 already covers what service pack one had plus more.

SP2 includes SP1 in it.
