Most of the differences and much of the conflict between these two sects of Islam are said to come from their divergent political views in who should have become caliph or the supreme Muslim leader.

The question thus is why do these two sects still remain different and sometimes even fight and kill each other when the institution they are fighting over (the Caliphate) has been dead for 600+ years and in all probability will never be resurrected?

Nelli... If I remember correctly most of the Christian denominations' differences stem from an institution that is still pretty much alive: the Papacy. The Muslims do not have this "excuse"...the last Caliph died more than 600 years ago and like I said I seriously doubt anyone will ever take his place again.

good question.

it is a classic example of 'let by gones be by gones' being torn to shreds.

what they are feuding for is political power, especialy in a power vacuum like Iraq where each party stands to lose if it does have political power. That and being prodded on by conditions in their country by foreign invaders.

their fight has nothing to do with Islam.

why do they remian different? good question. ask them.

I'm just a Muslim.

Man, they are Muslims, even if they are all Shiites or Sunnis they would kill each other if they are from different street, and yes the answer is just about money and control.

Iran back up Sunnis, cause is the chance if they manage to drive Irak into Civil war to establish an irani friendly government which would increase the power of Iran in the region.

I'm sorry, but I'm not Muslim, Shiite or Sunni - I just have to tell you that you are a gorgeous piece of eye candy. But, thank you for your serious question here - I'll think about it later and try to give you a serious answer.

Good point. I don't understand it either. Over here the Sunnis and Shias work together, study together and yes, we pray together in the same mosque.

Can someone please give this man a really good answer, cos as a Muslim I'd like to know too.

Imagine if you took first position in a competition but by force were snatched of ur title and given the 4th runner up trophy?

Hazrat Ali whom sunni's call the fourth Khalifa, was supposed to be the first. All prophets were chosen by Allah and since Mohammed was the last prophet, a follower was needed, an Imam and Allah chose Ali and commanded Mohammed to announce this fact to all.

But soon after the Prophet's death all the politicians snatched Hazrat Ali of his rights and held a VOTE and made Abu Bakr the first Khalifa.

If this wasn't enough, they tried to completely wipe out Islam and Mohammed's teachings but Hazrat ali always stood up to theyr wrong ways and became their enemy.

Therefore the shias are from Hazrat ali's generations and the Sunnis from those liars and cheaters.

I am not a Muslim, but I think that this differences are similar like differences seen between Christianity, Protestantism and Orthodox church.

good question, Shiites teach their followers hate towards the Sunnis, they're still ticked off about the killing of Ali.
Muslims should Unite, and i think Hezbolla's recent Victory on israel helped do that, but we still have some radicals running around.
