Personally I think it's human's nature to forget God and assume that he is the greatest if there is no suffering through disease and war...humans are constantly reminded that they should remember God when such disasters occur and expose their weakness.

Yes. Don't limit man's (OK...and women of course) concerns to disease & war. There are natural disasters (storms, earthquakes, accidents at sea), mechanical disasters (airplane crashes, car accidents), family issues (divorce, weddings, sick children, parents or spouse) and even crisis of faith...any faith...when people will turn to and pray to God. Or to Allah, the Great Spirit, a Higher Power or "diety" they believe in.

It just seems that in todays world disease and war are the major topics.

And of course people will pray for a date on Friday night, good gas milage, job promotion and the like. As they say; God answers all prayers but not always with the answer we would like.

yes because there are many other things which are involved in Religious Belief Systems than what you mentioned. Religious leaders help prepare the Culture and Society for the Afterlife, tell the people when to plant crops, the best time to hunt, marry, perform rituals and ceremonies for the Culture and Society to prosper in trade, form alliances with which other Cultures and Societies, which persons are capable of ruling the Culture and Society, etc etc.

Of course... the suggestion scares me a bit... would you only pray to God if you're suffering??

wow that is such an interesting way to look at it
i never thought about it b4 and i guess people would just pray for all the wrong reasons. its like my mum always says. without the bad there what is good? its the ying and the yang. i think people would become very selfish (as if they wernt already) its an interesting concept that i will definetely think about more, thank you for your insight

I don't know about praying to God, but I think our first "prayer" or affirmation or realization or whatever you want to call it should be thanksgiving.

Even in the worst circumstances, people can always find something to be grateful for.
