Here are thoughts from my 360 Blog of September 10:

Don't target more than about 2 lbs per week. If you try to lose faster, your body will go into "starvation mode" and get very stingy about burning calories while at the same time very efficient about storing any calories that you do provide. And it will make you feel awful.

There is no site specific way of losing fat... the old myth about working your abs to burn belly fat isn't true. To get rid of love handles, you need to lose overall fat. That happens with exercise and watching your diet. More on that below.

The most effective way to lose fat is aerobic exercise in the "moderate" fat-burning range, ideally first thing in the morning before you eat. When you wake your body is ready to burn fat and your levels of growth hormone are highest at that time. Later in the day it can take up to 30 minutes just to put your body into a fat-burning mode.

Another overlooked way to burn fat is by lifting weights. Skeletal muscle has very high caloric needs... almost twice that of adipose (fat) tissue. Put on a little muscle and you will burn calories all day even at rest. Be aware that skeletal muscle weighs more, so with this approach you may see your weight increasing while your body fat is melting away. Not realizing this often stresses folks who think they should be losing weight as a measure of fitness. Forget the scale, look in the mirror and you will be happy.

To lose a pound of fat, you need to eliminate about 3500 calories. You can do this by burning more with exercise or by modifying your diet to reduce intake. If you do a Google search on say, "swimming calories" you will quickly find a website with tables of calories burned for a given exercise. You can use such lists to estimate how many calories you are burning up with your routine.

For diet, keep a diary for a couple of weeks counting calories, grams of protein, and grams of fat intake. It is easy with online sources of nutritional information (type the name of the food and calories into the Google search engine) and packaging labels. That will let you quickly figure out where the fat is coming from in your diet.

Fat gives you 9 calories per gram. So take the number of grams of fat, multiply by 9, then calculate what percentage the fat calories are of your total daily calories. Restricting the calories from fat to about 20% of your total intake is ideal for a maintenance diet... that isn't overly restrictive. Of note, you need some fat in your diet. For instance, the body uses fat to produce hormones. Once you have a picture of how to modify your diet, you can drop the diary and just go back to it occasionally if you are wanting to tweek things further.

There is a subset of questions that goes further and asks about "How to get a six-pack?" The answer is the same. Six-packs are 20% abdominal exercise and 80% diet. There is one caveat... abdominal muscles will form in the position that you exercise them, so be certain to pull them tightly toward your spine while doing crunches, etc. Also, during most lifting, the "core is active" which means that you should be stabilizing with contracted abs then too. Fail to do this and the abs will form, but bulging outward and the result is not attractive.

If you are trying to build muscle as a way to lose fat, then you may need to increase total calories and specifically your protein intake. I target about 0.8 g of protein per pound of body weight each day when actively building. That is far more protein than most people need in their diets.

My ideas? Try to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. Work hard, but don't over 60 minutes at a time. Do planks and other abs exercises on alternate days.

On training days, do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.

The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!

Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.

Read magazines like Shape, Womens Fitness, Fitness, etc to get tips and to stay motivated.

Good luck and stick at it. This plan has lost me 20 lbs in 12 weeks so far, just go for it!

There are alot of good plans out there. The key is, you must be ready and committed to do it! I am on the Nutri System Diet and I have lost on average, 3-5 pounds a week! For me, the difference has been to find healthy snacks that satisfy me. I really love sweets, so I use sugar-free jello, pudding made with lo-fat or soy milk. I don't care much for soy, but after you mix it with something, you can't taste much difference. Also, I love Splenda! I make tea and lemonade with it, and that's about all I drink besides my coffee or water. Also, if you are a potatoe lover, try turnips! You can mash them, or cut them up like fries and freeze them. Then when you take them out of the freezer, bake them under the broiler for a few minutes. This keeps me from feeling deprived of what I really want! Also, try the low-carb chocolate bars. Some of them are not so good, but others are great! You just have to find the ones you like. Popcorn has been another good choice for me. If I skip my Nutri System dessert, I can eat 3 cups of popcorn in the evening, while I'm watching my favorite shows. One more thing....grapefruit and green tea can help accelerate weight loss, and the tea is really good for your immune system. It keeps you from getting colds too! If you don't like the taste of it, mix it half and half with some flavor of tea that you do like. I hope these ideas will help you. Good luck!

With 3 kids you are probably very busy. I suggest getting some pre-made meals. There are many companies out there that do make pre-made meals. I did Nutrisystem for about 3 months and lost 30 pounds. It does take alot of will power and some can be a little expensive, but a good way to understand about meal portion size and food types. Look around and make the appropriate choice for you.

Losing weight in one week

Losing weight is difficult. But here I am introducing you some tips to lose a small amount of weight in a healthy that that is also within a week.

Steps to losing weight fast

* Get a set of small hand weights, 3, 5 or 8 lbs.

* Do five to ten minutes of weight lifting for a half an hour after each meal. Lie on your back and slowly lift yourself up with weights in each hand. Do this daily for the full seven days.

* Before or after you take a bath or a shower each day, do five minutes of jogging in place, your weights in hand.

* Do not eat greasy foods. Drink only water and fruit juice. Eat a portion of vegetables at every meal.

* In the morning try to eat fruit. Do NOT dump heaps of sugar on your cereal.

* Follow this regimen for seven days and you will see results.

* Take time to cook, Make food look appealing; don't be afraid to try new things. If you're not sure how to prepare or eat things you can go on an online search engine (such as google) and look how recipes and how to eat things.

* It is a shown fact that one of the "weight loss tips" is not true, many of us believe that if we eat late at night the food turns directly into fat. This is only a myth, food is stored all day into fat, it has nothing to do with time. Make sure you eat a lot of protein, this is important because if you don't have enough protein in your diet you will lose muscle and not fat.(Muscle will be burned but not as much). And finally have fun with it! Make up a dance or jump rope to music, getting active doesn’t mean boot camp!

Quick tips

* Eat plenty of vegetables with each meal.

* Drink plenty of water

* Before buying any food, look for carbs, calories and sugar in the ingredients. You'll want to cut down on all three.

I'll state the obvious first, losing weight takes hard work just like it does to gain muscles. Stay clear of fast food and junk food.

Walking helps some people lose weight quickly, but try anything that keeps your heart pounding such as arobics.

A plan of action for yourself is a great way to start! :) Look at your weaknesses. Some people eat to many sugary things and some are carb hounds. Whichever (or both) that it is, make some changes. For instance, cut out white breads, rolls, potatoes..anything WHITE..and trade it for wheat. Your body needs carbs, just the right ones.
Choose lean meats, pitas, yogurts, veggies, fruits, soups etc over junk food.
Drink 8 glasses of water a day, it truly works for you and also curbs your appetite, its one of your best weapons.
Then you need an excercise plan, one that gets you moving and your heart rate up...choose one that you will stick with and one you like. I use a recumbant bike and I read while I am cycling. I burn lots of calories and its not boring because I am reading! I also like walking (fast) with my mp3...Take your car (if you are in a nice neighborhood) and map out a mile for starters and do that a few times a week..you will see a difference.
Basically the jist of it all is burn more calories than you consume, but consume the right ones! :) Good luck to yoU!

whatever you do... don't starve yourself. Studies have shown that your body (knowing you are not eating) will store fat reserves.. it's call self preservation. I found the South Beach Diet worked the best for me... the first two weeks are difficult, but wow, by the end of those two weeks, my stomach was almost flat and my clothes were loose. try to eliminate all white foods.... sugar, white bread, rice, potatoes, it's a low carb diet. And then starting off slow, begin walking faster and longer each day. you don't have to pay to join a gym.
