No worries about the political scene here. Life's very much normal/the same, even on the day of the military coup!
Bangkok/Pattaya are 2 major tourist destinations in Thailand and they are 2-hours apart from one-another. The country is really huge and has much to offer.
Depending on how much time you've got in hand, here's what I have for these 2 places:
Get on one of their city tours (Bangkok or Pattaya). Best way to see many places in a short time. Ancient and historical wats/temples. Elephant trekking, river rafting - quite an experience for big city folks. Night life/entertainment - very varied. The food here (Thai and seafood) to be experienced, not expensive at all. Shoppers' paradise! Branded stuff at major shopping centers and almost everywhere, the local markets for the copy ones!
Have fun :-)

Kriti....There is no problem about the political situations, everything just fine. Regarding visa....since you didn't mentioned about your passport originate, I would recommend you to check with Thai Embassy or Thai Consulate Office which is nearby you. Otherwise check on the website. But normally most of tourists are granted for 15 days visa where you can pick up at the airport. You can enjoy shopping everywhere in Bangkok as there are lot of Shopping Centers around the city. Price is not much different compared to traveling time.
Note: Bangkok is the big city with 16+++ millions people (registered)

The world's easiest coup. No problem in Thailand. The biggest hassle you will have is the new airport - getting into Bangkok will be a headache. But for shopping, you can buy knockoff stuff everywhere - Rolexes, Chanel, Dior, all fake. On the street works. For electronics in Bangkok, Panthip Plaza on Petcheburi or MBK, a huge electronics place where National Stadium (and the BTS station of the same name) is.
But don't worry about the politics here, no problems.

despite there is travel warning, it is safe in Bangkok as the kingdom knows tt most of the people who come to Bangkok are foreigners, tourists.
i suggest u to go to Mahbonkrong plaza or MBK, Siam Plaza, etc. It is easy to shop in Bangkok as there are many plazas (malls) in the center of Bangkok, Phatongnam . Pechatburi, (sorry i am not good with names) for great shopping. for budget traveller, there are many local markets for u to shop on clothes, accesories.
About Visa... what are u? american? Asian? it is east to get visa and trust me u will enjoy being in Thailand, dont just go to Bangkok or Pattaya, go to other famous place like newly renovated Phuket, Phi Phi Islands, Ko Samui, Ko Tay, and visit many its beautiful beaches. (well if u like the sun) u will not regret being in Thailand, about Languages... u can learn from guiding books about Thailand.
