I'm probably going to catch a bunch of flack for this but here goes...
I have a pit bull, I am going to assume that is the dog you are speaking of. I take every pracaution I know to keep him in my yard so he doesn't escape and run the streets like so many are allowed to do by irresponsible pet owners. I keep him chained and collared and I check his chain and collar occasionally to make sure it's not wearing thin somewhere to allow him to escape. I DO NOT let my kids friends in my back yard UNLESS I am out there. I keep my gate locked at all times and a sign on my fence so I know that maybe nobody is going to come in contact with my dog that way. I've explained to all my neighbors AND their kids that my dog has never bitten anyone before but I don't want to take that chance, if something they are playing with goes in my yard DO NOT climb my fence for it, come knock on my door and I'll get it. I socialize my dog with other dogs and with people other than his family but I do not do this where I know there are going to be children or people that are afraid of my dog because of the reputation of the breed. I know in my area where taking my dog is acceptable.

It's the dog owners responsibility to keep their dog from running the streets or off the lead. It takes a little forethought when walking them so you don't get anyone upset because they fear a certain breed, and some breeds are very intimidating.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that any dog owner should be responsible for their dog. Along with that responsibility comes knowing where and when is a suitable place to take them. The owners that let their dogs run off the leash or escape from their yard (which happens way too often in my opinion) are very irresponsible and should be fined and their dog removed from their home. And people need to STOP teaching their dogs to be so aggressive, it's just not right.

I have a ten stone bull mastiff and we always walk him on the lead it annoys me when other dog owners let there dogs run around. My dog has been bit on the head and needed treatment he still has a scar and he was on the lead. Now when another dog comes up to mine that is not on the lead it makes my dog go crazy.I also pick up his crap and it is huge (a shovel and a black bin bag lol)but other owners especially those with small dogs don't bother and it makes my blood boil.A lot of kids make a beeline for my dog to touch him without asking permission and I tell them he jumps and could knock them over but their parents just laugh and say it's OK!I have two kids aged 15 and 11 and my dog is great with kids but they don't know this for sure and it would be the dog that gets the blame if anything happens it's not fair.

I would suggest a Border Collie, Labrador, Golden Retriever, or a mutt(mix of more than 2 breeds). The Border Collie, Lab, and Golden Retriever are wonderful breeds. They can learn quite fast and are very friendly. As for mixes and mutts, they can be way more layed back than they breeds are, and are really good for first time owners. I would not suggest a German Shepherd. German Shepherds are not a good choice for a first dog. They can be extremely hyper. Sometimes aggressive and as playful puppies who bite when they play(not on purpose but it still happens) they can hurt badly. They have strong jaws and sharp teeth and get hyper easily. For someone who hasn't owned a dog before those features don't add up well. Not only that but German Shepherds are whiny as puppies and that habit is hard to break. Overall they are a bit more difficult to train than a Labrador or golden retriever would be. Also consider on adopting a dog from a humane society. If you adopt a dog there is more of a chance that the initial training is done(like house breaking and basic commands), alot of humane societies try to train basic training to all dogs to make them more appealing to possible adopters. So that could be really better for you. I would also suggest not getting a puppy. Puppies are harder to begin their training. First time dog owners tend to get upset or annoyed at a puppy that doesn't understand what you are telling them to do.

What are you classing as a dangerous dog?.
Even a Yorkie has the ability to be dangerous and cause serious damage to a person through biting with razor sharp teeth.
As a dog owner myself I do not allow mine off the lead at anytime and will not allow children to stroke them without them asking if it's ok to do so.

Well, let's put this into proper context. First off - any dog can be dangerous and ALL dogs can bite! Unless it is specified as a dog run area, then I think it is very rude to walk a dog around off lead when it goes and runs up to anyone at anytime.

Having said that, I have known dogs that can be walked off lead and they never ever go up to anyone and always stay right by the owner.

It is common etiquette.

Same as I hate when people come running up to my dog ON LEAD and throw themselves at him and push their faces right into his. Are they NUTS?

Now you and I both know that if my dog bites them - they are gonna sue ME regardless of the fact that THEY came up to MY DOG on LEAD and were acting rudely.

It is basic manners and it isn't the dog's fault - it is the owner's fault.

There is no such thing as a dangerous dog. There ARE dogs that are owned by dangerous and idiotic people and this is when the problems start.

I have had German Shepherds and Rotty's and they have never been a problem - BUT, if I had raised them differently, they could have done some damage. It's not the dog's fault, its the owner.

Dogs are just plainly dangerous and dirty animals. In short they are an offensiove weapon. Cyclists are beginning (In England) to get sprays to discourage dogs although a bicycle is an effective defensive weapon.

I am intolerant of Dogos, German Shepherds and Greyhounds, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Bulldogs. Sheepdogs and terriers are just a nuisance. Even Royal Corgis are not under control !

Why don't people keep Bassetts, Labradors and Springer Spaniels?

people dont relise that dogs are wild animals at heart and no matter how long or how well you know the animal it could turn on anyone at any moment for no reason it was a daft mistake to domesticate these animals and they should all be keept on leads with mouth gards on just look at the little baby that got killed by two dogs the other day and they were around people everyday and never bit anyone dont take the chance.
