"The bride and groom make the first slice using a special (often engraved) wedding cake knife designated for this special cake cutting event. The groom places his hand over the bride's on the knife handle and together they make the first cut. This is done to symbolize the new life they will share together."

I should have known I what our marriage was to be like based on this moment. The knife was upside down, the carrot cake was moist and dense, my husband was determined that the knife was going through the cake - no matter what. I started laughing and could not explain what was happening as he resolutely pushed my crushed hand and the knife through the cake. We all had a good laugh when I did explain it.

Our life has been fueled by his determination and tempered by my humor.

i read that traditionally, cutting the wedding cake symbolized the bride losing her virginity when it used to be done alone by her, but now that its done by both the bride and groom, it meant a commitment to provide for each and show affection & love

The bottom tier. Or if you are like my husband (a man on a mission) you start at the top tier and cut all the way down all 3 tiers of cake! I couldn't stop him. I practically had to wrestle the knife away. It was very funny - he had no clue what he was doing.

I think it is a tradition but stems from way back when cutting the cake meant good luck. If it was ones birthday the one celebrating would cut the cake. So now that they are on a new journey together as man and wife they cut the cake together symbolising them having good luck in their marriage.

I found this link which gives you a list and description of all the wedding customs we follow today. it is very interesting.

Hey, it's a lot better than cutting the cheese! :)
Seriously, like the rest have already said, cutting the cake together at the wedding is a fun tradition, symbolizing the bride and groom starting their new life together ...and doing things together as a team! (The two are now one!)

It's just a tradition. But I think it symbolizes the union of the two people getting married and sharing things as well as life together.

It is an older traditional where the cake symbolizes the sweetness of marriage. By feeding each other, they show how they will give the other happiness.
