Most religions are based on the fear of death. Why? because fear is the best motivator. It's evolution. The more 'successful' religions replace the less successful. The same evolutionairy process applies to hating people outside the religion, so they can be subjucated without pesky morals getting in the way.

Fear and hate are also natural outcomes of an 'us and them' philosophy which says 'them' are bad as they don't have our 'morals'.

I'm reluctant to answer this in the religion section but there it is, in my opinion.

Most religions are based on fear. Nietzsche wisely said something along the lines of: Religion is the opiate of the masses. Like a drug that tranquilizes, religion keeps people controlled. Many believe that fear of hell will make people behave morally. I find the opposite to be true, since God supposedly forgives the "sins" that people commit.

Religion, Political, Military. and as long as those in charge are performing their duties they will remain in power. religion explains the basic ideas of what a Culture and Society believe about the works of nature both the natural and non natural works. the best time to perform planting of crops, best time to hunt, marry,. to explain what happens after death. etc. one can tell the type of Culture and Society by the religion as well as tell the type of Culture and Society by the Religion.
