Sanity testing is a preliminary check of functionality prior to execution of a comprehensive test suite. Just a quick inspection to instill sufficient confidence to proceed with formal testing. Participants generally have an expectation of success.

Smoke testing is similar, but often referenced in those situations where there is generally a much lower expectation of success, hence the term "smoke", as in the result of "crash and burn"!!!
