Christchurch is extremely cold in Winter mainly because most of the houses aren't heated properly for an extremely cold climate. Outdoors it's not colder than UK or Canada etc but inside you can get ice on the windows unless you're prepared to spend a lot on heating!

Places down south can be just as cold as the north. I used to live in South Australia and I do need a warm jacket, a scarf, and gloves to keep me warm in the winter. NZ is more south than AU, so I'm sure it's colder there than in Australia. I doubt if it gets as cold as Europe though.

Do bear in mind that in the southern hemisphere the seasons are opposite of the northern hemisphere, so summer is in december and winter is in june. Now would be the springtime in NZ, so it the temperature should be pleasant.

I guess your idea of cold depends on where you're from and what time of the year you'll be there....I'm from Maryland and I didn't think so. I was there in November and it was great. I just took along a light jacket, but I really didn't need it. You will love the gardens...it's a lovely city!

Well, that's a bit of an odd question. We used to live there. No colder than anywhere else in Britain. Apart from in the winter, being near the sea didnt help.

I have just returned from there and spent 6 days of bright and reasonably warm days considering it has just turned to spring. The wind was a bit chilly at times, but folk in Christchurch didnt seem to notice it.Does that mean they are used to it? LOL

Depends on your perception of "cold".

If you are used to winter temperatures in Canada, for instance, you'd regard Christchurch as quite warm in winter!

In summer it can be subject to very hot north-westerly winds.
