Using a stepper can be good exercise. You should do it at speed that gets your heart rate up but no so hard that you couldn't carry on a conversation.
As to how long, listen to your body. You should work up to 30-60 minutes a day.
At some point you should add upper body exercise

I think an elliptical trainer is better than a stair stepper. I found with a stair stepper I couldn't tolerate it as long as I could on the elliptical. Aren't you going to physical therapy? I'm sure they could recommend the best equipment for your needs. I personally do not like machines. I would rather do some other type of exercise. For fear of telling you something inappropriate I won't suggest any particular exercises, Good Luck to you.

My ideas? Try to do 200 minutes of cardio a week. Remember fat does not turn into muscle, so you need to lose your fat while putting on muscle. Work hard, but don't over 60 minutes at a time. Do planks and other abs exercises on alternate days.
On training days, do 5-10 minutes of cardio to warm up, then do your weight training. Do 30 to 60 minutes more of cardio, then go home.
The best time to eat is just after your workout within an hour when your metabolism is raging. For your muscles, incorporate some isolated soy protein or whey protein. Whey is more potent but the soy tastes better!
Don't look at your scale as the be all and end all, but get a measuring tape to check your progress, and that will show more tangible results.
Read magazines like Shape, Womens Fitness, Fitness, etc to get tips and to stay motivated.
Good luck and stick at it. This plan has lost me 20 lbs in 12 weeks so far, just go for it!

Those kind of steppers are not good as the only workout.
You need to really burn calories or build muscles and that will do neither.
That kind of stepper is good for developing some core muscles and balance, but that's it.
If you can, run/jog 2 miles per day. Get a great pair of real running sneakers and clothes that will keep you cool(EMS Techwick).
Good Luck

Steppers are good for exercising your lower legs (calves). You won't burn a ton of calories on it, but it's a decent form of exercise. In combination with other cardio exercises, it's a good thing to do!

The stepper won't make much difference on its own. Go running/walking, biking, swimming, skipping, rowing, sit ups/press ups and mic them up to get fit.
There is no quick easy way and no piece of equipment will make much difference

Yes they are a good way of exercising and your own body should be able to tell you for how long, but it might be an idea to go to the gym and ask there
