Never cut lettuce with a knife, that will cause it to go bad faster, instead rip it.
Try removing the core and any loose limp outer leaves. Rinse in cold water and leave to drain in a colander about an hour. Then wrap it loosely in dry paper towels and in an unsealed plastic bag and refrigerate in the crisper drawer.

Do you mean room temperature? Are you leaving it out in the sun? Lettuce keeps for ages (at least a week) in my fridge (salad crisper drawer). Make sure your lettuce is not touching the back of your fridge. If it does it is likely to get frost damage then the leaves go mushy ultra quick.
Wrapping in paper is far better than plastic/cling film. Remove any rotten bits as soon as possible. It's best to wash and prepare (rip/cut) leaves off the head of lettuce just before you eat it, rather than do a whole lot and fridge it. Prepared salads cost so much in the supermarkets because they have to cover the high % wastage - it simply does not keep!

i life alone and use a mini gem lettuce, i use the whole thing in one go. Or in summer i buy coz lettuce and use a couple of leaves at a time. Avoid cutting through the leaves on your lettuce store at the bottom of the fridge and keep it as dry as possible experiment with different lettuces on the odd times i have guests i mix different lettuces together like they do in most restaurants

never cut a lettuce always rip it, wash and rip then gently shake dry, never blot as this will bruise the lettuce and cause it to wilt, place in a plastic bag and seal it or tie then put it in the fridge (at the bottom as this is the coolest part of the fridge), when you want to use it take what you need and rewash it...it will crisp up.
your lettuce will keep in a fridge for up to a week (if you bought it fresh)...

It should be kept in a fridge and should last for about a week. If the worst comes to the worst, maybe one or two of the outside leaves will turn slightly brown - but all the lettuce inside will stay the way it should do. Bon appetit!

The only thing I can add is my trick: I keep my lettuce in a bag with holes (grapes came in the bag originally). The holes allow any water to drain and keeps my lettuce from wilting. I use green leaf and iceberg lettuce and the bag works for both.

Buy a "lettuce spinner". Wash the lettuce leaves, and then spin them dry, put in plastic bag. It lasts longer. Or buy salad mix from Smart and Final (USA) don't know what they do, but that lasts a long time!
