They can live alone and they love human company all the more then. You can also usually put them with a rabbit with whom they can get quite friendly (they don't interbreed!).

If you or someone else is home a lot of the time and interact with your piggy, then he'll probably be fine alone. But if you're gone a lot, to work or go to school, give your piggy a playmate. It'll be happier and healthier.

As for getting a rabbit as a playmate. Don't. Their hind legs are very strong and a kick, can kill your piggy. Also, their food can harm the Guinea Pig because it can contain antibiotics that are harmful for the guinea pigs and doesn't contain Vitamin C that is essential.

Ok, apparently all the people who have answered your question don't know anything about guinea pigs. First of all, guinea pigs are VERY SOCIAL CREATURES. They live in little piggy packs in the wild, they aren't solitary! Very few piggies are happy on their own. Pet stores tell you this business because they have it all confused with things like hamsters who are solitary. Pet Stores are very uneducated.

Putting two males together does not cause them to fight. Putting incompatible males together DOES cause them to fight. All pigs have personalities. It would be like putting the class jock in with the stoner for life and saying ok, here, be best friends. It is not going to work.

The best way to get this to work is to buy two SAME-SEX pigs from a rescue. They can tell you whose personality matches with who. Or if you truly feel you have to go to a pet store and get a disease-ridden, parasite-infested, and if female, possibly pregnant pig, then get two from the same cage AS LONG AS THEY ARE THE SAME SEX!

You will be much happier if you go to a rescue. Go to www.petfinder.com. Pigs need company of their own kind. Sure it is nice for them to cuddle with you for a while, but it is not enough for a pig to be truly content.

Go to a rescue. Keep pigs in pairs. Don't let them make babies. The world will be a much better place.

No, they will be alright. If you put 2 males together they fight. If you put a female and male together the breed. They are just like rabbits. I raised guinea pigs.

Keep the cage in a room that people are in a lot, and let the piggy run around! Human companionship is just as good as long as it's frequent.

Yes. They can live alone. They wont be lonely. They dont have that emotion. Their instincts are the main emotions they have. fear, hunger, reproduction, sleep... that's what they worry about, not loneliness.
