It depends how long he was there...I would pack his crapola and put it outside...

For the most part, though I can't say for sure legally, I'll offer this.
Kick him out. Tell him he has a week (or two, depends on how generous you feel at the time), to find a place and move or his crap is on the street.
Don't offer his money back unless he's already paid his share for the next month. He's lived there too for the last month and so he should have paid.
In Mo. legally, and if the person wants to push the issue, one has to follow the procedure of a landlord. Give 30 days notice and if they don't comply, then have the police or sheriff remove them and their belongings.
Not many want to push the issue though and take the hint when their things are put in trash bags and thrown out to the street. After all, you're not a landlord, you don't 'rent' any part of the building to him. He only pays his fair share.

I don't know about CA law. But if his name is not on any of the paperwork, ask him to leave. If he won't leave, call the cops to escort him off the premises.
If you are afraid of what he might do if you ask him to leave, then don't ask...just call the cops and let them handle it.
California does not recognize common law marriage. So it doesn't matter how long you have lived together...he has no rights to stay if you want him out.
And if he causes problems, get a restraining order against him as well.
