Now the population in India has come down considerably.
When you talk about total population of India, today the Muslim population is on increase at a rapid speed as each Muslims can marry 4 or 5 or 6 wives and can produce as many children every year. The Bigamy act is only for Hindus. The Government is not above to restrict this as every political party want Muslim vote bank.

The other reasons for population increase were –
1. In earlier years say about 30 years and back there was no proper sex education and birth control measures were not known to people.

2. The urban population were very poor mostly formers and they lived in villages. There was no electricity in those days in urban areas and after sunset people were not going out anywhere. They were not having any entertainment. The only free entertainment was sex which they enjoyed it almost daily and getting children as many as they want.

3. The cost of living in those days was minimal unlike these days and they did not have problem to bring up their children.

India's population growth rate has been declining since the 70's. It currently has a growth rate of around 1.4%. India has a higher growth rate, than, say, the US, because people in India tend to have fairly large families. There are lots of reason's why people have large families, primarily because of tradition. Contraceptives are available in India, but there's a social stigma attached to their use, and marriage is looked at as serving the purpose of raising children.

1) Lack of education
2) Importance to son as people think that giving birth to a son is the gateway to heaven
3) Culture idea that "Children are God's gift to man"
4) Lack of women empowerment as they are taken as factories for child birth especially sons.
5) High child and infant mortality rate due to which parents aren't sure if their kids will live so they give birth too many kids.
