Type 1. A mail shot is a directed, well supposedly, targeted sales campaign. People who match the marketer’s view of the client group are sent information which it is hoped will inspire a purchase. Selling dental equipment you buy a list of dentists. Unfortunately now they are mass mail outs like type 2.
Type 2. A company buys a huge mailing list or combines their lists to allow them to flood the areas in question with cheaply produced junk mail e.g. insurance companies. This approach works on the theory that 2% will respond, and the profit from this area will more than cover the cost of production.

A mail shot is a letter or other printed media that is sent by post to (usually) a named recipient with the intention of getting them to take some action, i.e. donate money, buy goods, respond to a survey, etc.

A MAIL SHOT is when brochures, leaflets, letters etc are sent out to existing and potential customers. For example TELEWEST, CABLE, and SKY send u leaflets to try and get you to join them. And ROYAL MAIL have just sent lots of information out on the Pricing in Proportion.
It is just basically when mail is sent out in bulk!
