It is yet another idea which we have copied from the French, for whom it has long been a replacement for religious teaching in schools. I am sceptical about its results. I attended a church school where we learned a great deal about social responsibility without even realising the fact through the Christian ethos which pervaded every aspect of our schooling. The best way to teach social responsibility is to teach children to behave well to those around them. The rest will follow.

When I trained to teach, I trained in Citizenship, and thought it was a great idea. However, I have been teaching history, govt and politics for 3 years now, and I can't say that in any school I have been in, that Citizenship is being taught.
However, if it is done well, it should encourage young people to consider others and to take responsibility for their actions. Some of the schools I have been in have been doing this in other ways, for example through 'circle time' in year 7 and 8, and through form time discussions of emotions, and coaching to improve emotional intelligence.

the parents should be teaching children social responsibility... and if they don't want to they shouldn't be having kids!!!!
buy doing it at school, just gives parents another excuse not to be social responsible themselves (ie. teaching their kids)... and as kids learn 'more' from their parents, there is absolutely no point teaching it at school.
really there should be social responsibility and parenting classes for adults when they are about to have kids and when they have kids (compulsory)... so they teach their kids properly and communicate them effectively.
as a tax payer i would consider that to be better spending... deal with the cause of the problem, not the problem itself.
