I think that a clean hotel with good breakfast and a decent room size in the center of amsterdam is going to cost you more than 150-180 euros a night... but of course I could be wrong...

check these sites...

Good luck and enjoy your stay!

(edit) Someone suggested the American Hotel.... I second that motion, the American Hotel in Amsterdam is regarded as top notch and is very often used by big name celebrities who are in town for performances (bands, singers, etc.)

Someone else suggested staying outside of Amsterdam, that's also a good idea, IF you're prepared to suffer public transport on a daily basis... I definitely agree that Amsterdam is a tourist trap and Holland has a LOT more to offer than Amsterdam... Take my hometown for instance, http://www.denhaag.com/default.asp?id=DOORWAYNEWS-uk (unfortunately hotels in The Hague are not much cheaper than they are in Amsterdam, I DO think Den Haag IS a much nicer place to visit though)

As someone who goes to Holland a great deal, I would recommend staying almost anywhere but Amsterdam, for the simple reason that the country is small and has an excellent train-service.

Stay in Haarlem.....it is absolutely beautiful with canals, and only half an hour from Amsterdam Central Station. A "must see" is the Franz Hals museum and also the spectacular organ at St.Bavo, which Mozart played. Haarlem is very much the upmarket face of Holland.

If you like "decent" night-life rather than sleeze, Rotterdam is a fine city with a fantastic vista, some exciting modern architecture and a docklands boat-ride which is amazing.

Leiden is gorgeous too; with many canals and lovely old buildings.

Go and meet the Hollanders in the towns and cities which are less touristy, but every bit as beautiful.....fine people.

If you MUST go to Amsterdam, then be prepared to pay high prices and eat relatively poor food in expensive restaurants. Still, the museums alone are worth the visit.

Above all, enjoy this impressive little country.

The Times Hotel by the Herengracht. Canal view, 10-15 mins walking from Centraal Station. I stayed there not too long ago, good hotel around that price range. The rooms are of decent size and very stylish. Breakfast is about 10 euros per person... dunno if that's worth it, but some pleasant European style cafes where you can have a nice breakfast are just a minute or two away by foot from the hotel. Don't know the URL on the top of my head, though, but surely you can google it.

You can go to the American Hotel. Very good and near the Rijksmuseum. The price can be up to 190 Euro per night. Otherwise you can go to the Sofitel Amsterdam. Near central station with reasonable prices (5 star hotel)

Yes! Hotel Estheria on the Singel

We stayed there a year ago and it was simply fine!

A family run hotel in a converted terrace block.

Complimentary hot drinks and toffees were available in the foyer at all times. Very handy for most things and situated beside the quiet canal, not far from Cafe Luxembourg
