I ask this because I am fed up with our involvement in many wars which we should not partake in. our hospitals are a nightmare. education system seems to let down many people albeit many are passing multiple "A" level passes, whatever. community atmosphere is appalling and general violence on weekend nights is stopping many genuine folk from venturing out. immigration control is non existent, whats going on? whos to blame? can we change this tide to distruction? superman where are you when we need you...someone save this planet

I am 56 and have retired. I live in a nice house with no mortgage, a beautiful wife and have 4 wonderful kids (who live all over the place). My health is fine and we have a great social life.

The countryside is beautiful - we have just been to the West Country.

So, for us, England is great.

BUT: The health service is poor except for critical care; our education service is letting down both those who can achieve academically (because it is holding them back) and those who can't (because it is offering them no alternative).

Immigration is a major issue amongst most "ordinary" English people. It is too late to do anything about that - last week they reported that a third of all Londoners are from ethnic minority groups. They aren't going to leave. Eastern Europeans are going to come here in increasing numbers, both taking jobs and sending the money back to their own countries.

For immigrants it is obviously a great place - they have chosen England over their own countries.

For the unemployed and other non-contributors it is a great place - the handouts are endless.

Which political party promises to end all of the problems? None in a way that is credible.

So, if you are young, this country will only get worse. There is a real risk that the indigenous population will be the minority in a very short space of time.

If you earn your living here, increasing amounts will be taken from you by taxation to shore up the mess.

It is sad to say, but for anyone under about 35, the very best thing you can do is get out while you still can. Go to Australia or New Zealand, Canada or South Africa, or if you speak another language, to a country where that language is spoken.

England IS a good place to live for many of us. But it won't be long before we will have to say, "England WAS a good place for us to live; but that England has fallen into the wrong hands".

It isn't any better anywhere else though. There are problems with all of these things in other countries as well, you just don't hear about them unless its the Jewish bombing the Arabs (or like religion peoples).

I have lived in both the US and the UK and yes we seem to be headed down the same path as the US. Once discipline is judged and the law passed on refraining then society begins to crumble.

The war? Well better to take it to them than have it come here. These fanatics will not stop at America's doorstep as we have plainly seen with the recent trouble at Heathrow. There will always be wars, we just need to pick and choose our battles, this seems like a a good one to be involved with as far as wars go. I for one do not enjoy terroristism.

Education here is still better than the US even with the *passes*. and again I say with discipline gone the teachers really have nothing to use. There will always be those kids who don't want to learn and make it a hell for everyone but there could be alternatives to having them disrupt the system.

Drinking is and has been a problem here. Our people start way to young and are not taught the dangers well enough. Drink, drive and someone dies, who's to fault? Drink a lot over a period of time and it kills you, period and not a pleasant way to go either.

Immigration? Well I am for new blood and new ideas. I don't think that any country should have to take the dregs of another one though. But to disallow honest and people who wish to work at the jobs that we find demeaning? Give me a break!

With the EU there has been a lot of moving around and you will find Brits in Spain, France, Germany, Sweden etc just as there are people from those countries here. I think its about time the US joins the EU. It would help with the health care at least. The doctors there know how to wash their hands before seeing patients and so do the nurses. That's all it takes my friend to eradicate MRSA.

As for the medical practices? They need to learn they are not god and that patients have a say in their care as equals, after all its the money from us that pays for the NHS isn't it? So in essense we pay their salaries and should be treated much more respectfully.

Superman does not exist my friend, we will have to take our stand and say enough! Only when the country unites will things become better for all. It's the same no matter where you live. Stop being armchair politicians and get out there and do something.

Britain is a great place to live,it's working people however are getting rather tired of supporting the country. The rewards are not proportionate to the effort and the supported are not doing their bit.In fact they are demanding more and more.People THAT WORK are not politically motivated enough. The supported that do not wish to do any work or work of consequence are the politically demanding and receiving. This is why there is not enough financial resource for education ,nhs, armed services, transport. The Police are the Conservatives private army
and the Thatcher years produced the me,me society,Where the person comes first and the community can have what is left.
Britain is a great place but we all and in particular the young have to put the Great back in Great Britain.

In spite of what people may think, Britain is a good place to live. The people of Britain enjoy a democratic and free system of government. Changes can take place if and when enough people take up the challenge and vote accordingly. The political system in Britain allows for every citizen to have a say and to be heard. What you are reading here is just a small part of that. As to saving the planet, no matter how hard we in Britain try to turn back the tide of global warming, we will not succeed. The reason is not that we have not tried hard enough or are not continuing to try hard enough, it is that other countries, namely China and India are now moving away from the bicycle and oxcart to the 4x4 gas guzzler. In India, they are banning peddle powered rickshaws from Calcutta city centre to allow the free movement of 4x4s owned by the rich. Meanwhile, here in Britain, in London, the rickshaws plying for trade in Soho and Westend, are going to be licensed by Mayor Ken Livingstone. As for the education, if you want a good education, try and get born in Scotland or Wales. Both these British countries have excellent education systems. The English have not yet made up their minds about what to teach and the method. From my observations a 5 year old starting school in England is browbeaten into submission so that any natural enthusiasm for learning is destroyed in the first six months. School then becomes a place to bunk off from as soon as possible. In England there are estimated to be 55,000 truents on our streets daily. It's not all bad news however, because most of what we do is good.

I agree, this place is... well, poo

Look at other countries, they have improved, they care about the way things work. England has done nothing.

The transport is still rubbish, the hospitals are a joke (unless you are sick), kids finish school without basic knowledge of the world and groups of a/holes wonder round at night harassing passers by.

The problem is, for all this complaining, people don't actually seem to do anything, they acknowledge the problem yet can't be bothered to do anything about it.

I guess most of us are to blame then, for not making enough fuss to get it changed.

I agree with everything you have said and I believe that is mainly the labour party who are to blame as well as the PC and human rights brigade. It has all went a bit far.
I can see that in the future we will see the return of slums and poverty in britain while the rich get richer. We are going backward, not forward.

Wrong headed Government priorities. Left wing ideaology, PC nonsense, feminism and other isms. Enlarging the inefficient public sector. Indoctrination by left wing teachers and the TV media. And so on. Blair, always using the word investment, when he really means spending money.
