My son's first word was yesss, just like that. I had laid him on the bed to play with him right after changing him and he just laid there and said "yesss" i begged him to say it again, but he just wiggled around and smiled. Of course he said it more and more as time went on and also said the typical da da da da and ma ma ma. These "words" are the baby actually practicing new noises it has observed and is learning to form with it's mouth.
Words that it is "speaking" it really doesn't know what it's saying, depending on the reaction it gets fom you and other people it will keep saying it or stop. So if you hear your baby saying a word or noise you like show that you're happy about it and it will encourage your baby to repeat it over and over and try new words.

My daughter's first word was "no", my older boy's first word was "up" and my youngest's first word was "mama". It's hard to believe I still remember that - my daughter is now 18. Sheesh, it seems like forever ago - but she's still saying No to me. LOL
