I used laquer that you would paint canoes and outdoor furniture. On one of my hoods, I painted the interior with a high gloss acryllic house paint. This allows any mildew to be wiped off easily and also makes the aquarium brighter due to the reflective qualities.

I had a pine one, i just sanded it back then laquered it a few times, it sould water seal it.

But you have to do probably every year or so cos the water touches it directly and it may weaken the laquer or make it peel.

take clear caulk must be latex and smear it all over the wood on the inside of hood let it dry for at least 24hrs. before placing it back on tank.

change it to plastic hood... there are plastic hoods that looks like wood out in the market nowadays... with plastic hood it does not need maintenance or change the hood to hardwood hood if u insist on using wood...
