We are an intelligent race, it's true, but we are a feudal race as well. It's in our instincts to form families/tribes/nations, and then feel opposed by other tribes/nations. We are capable of greed and jealousy, and so want what our neigbours have, and end up taking them. Various nations have been bullies in the past, and some nations are still annoyed at this, (eg the British were conquerers, and some land is still fought over (The Falklands/Northern Ireland). Many wars are fought for religious reasons, while others are for resources (like oil).
In answer to the second part of your question, sometimes talking just isn't enough. When you are trying to negotiate with someone who simply won't compromise or stand down, no matter what, violence may be the only option. If we didn't fight, we would be walked all over!
(Besides, it keeps me in a job ;-P)

At one time we used to fight for survival, for food for things which were to some extent understandable.
Nowadays we have wars and fight for money, land, power, greed. We are an intelligent race, but if one group of people don't like or agree with another group, they see the only way to resolve the issue to fight about it. Which is quite silly ,like school boys in the playground.
I think the main problem is that the people of the world are controled by only a handful of people. And it's this handful of people who declare war, sending the troops off, and they go becuase they have been told.
If the population of a country voted on whether to go to war or not, i think in most cases they would vote no. And for those that voted yes, if they are the majority those people should be the ones to go fight. Like with G.W Bush, if he himself had to go the front lines, i'm sure there wouldn't be so much military threat being thrown around.
It's time the leaders of countries stopped using us as pawns in their conflicts and disagreements.

If anybody live under the illusion that we can actually live without wars that person must be naive enough to have ignored the human history.
The basic cause of our wars is our onerous claims of being intelligent race. It is in the human nature to first of all consider his/her survival before anything else. We will do anything to secure our survival.
We tend to believe that individually we possess that wisdom enough to do things. It breed conflict and competition which of course is the cause of our instabilities.
Every human has two things in common: selfiness and greedness.

There are different types of intelligence, not just one.
Having one type of intelligence such as a high IQ is not going to help if you lack common sense or emotional intelligence.
Everyone is different which is why there is so much conflict in humanity.

War is negotiating by other means. Wouldn't it be nice if we could all mind our own business? It's not reality. Look at Iraq. It's not a matter of getting along, it's a matter of religion and whose God is THE GOD. You have people that wish to kill off all people that do not believe in their God. This causes a fundamental problem. How do you overcome someones religious belief to the point that you can get along as humans? Remember, these people actually believe that their God wants them to go out an kill.

Unfortunately mankind has many negative traits i.e. greed, power, selfishness. These are harnessed by the ruthless and by would be politicians with their own agenda and then used to instill fear and mistrust across communities, nations and globally. We will only see the beginning of the end of wars when we, the people, reach out and try to understand others.

Because WAR is still romanticised in the eyes of the people who have never been in one, and the people who make the decision to go to war have never been in one. Wars are fought for two reasons. 1- as a positive act to make the world a better and place and 2- to defend against the positive act to make the world a better place. Hitler thought his war would make the world a better place, and who knows, it might have done?

So good of you to clarify race, no one knew what you were talking about...sigh.
Why don't you have a nice chat with Iran, North Korea, the war lords of Somalia, Robert Mugabe, Hugo Chavez and Osama. I hear they are very reasonable and just waiting for us to chat things over with them for some serious give and take.

Being intelligent does not imply being wise.
Unfortunately, intelligence and wisdom seem to be inversely proportionate to each other.
It's not people who wage any war - the establishment does it, often to make people forget the real issues for which the establishment is squarely responsible.
