You don't say where you live, but either the Society for Prevention of Cruelty for Animals or your local Animal Control will help you, or refer you to someone who can. The SPCA avoids harming animals, but Animal Control doesn't, necessarily, so that makes a difference in who you want to take care of the problem. An exterminator might be a third option, if you would rather get rid of any and all possums around your living space.

This happened to two people I know, only it got inside.
It got in some way from underneath. With both people it was in the cabinets.

They used cat traps...they put food inside and pushed it up close
to the open cabinet door. Of course the things won't come out until dark...They trapped it and took it out someplace and let it go.

They did have to get the underside of their trailer fixed, it did a fair amount of damage.

You didn't say how long it has been there, but I would do something as soon as possible.

By the way, the door on the trap snaps closed when it enters.

Good Luck!

These people called everyone they could think to call...there was
no help to be found....noone wanted any part of it..they did tell her about the cat trap..

Call the game warden. He/she can remove the animal for you. Don't try to interact with the possum yourself. I have had a bad experience with possums in urban areas. While possums don't carry rabies, they can have many other diseases and they do bite! A game warden can take the appropriate precautions and many will release healthy animals into the wild where they will be happier and safer. Ask the game warden when you call (you can find the number in your local phone book) what his/her policies on animal release are, if you are concerned.
