Let me give you the definition of the word "dictionary". A dictionary is a book where you can find all the meanings of the word "journal", with information about its origin etc. You can also find dictionaries on the Internet from which the people who want to give you a complete answer (hoping to get 10 points) will copy the definitions for you, helping you not to know the meaning of that word, but to be an ignorant. Is this what you want?

The root word of journal comes from old French jurnal, jornal, or even journal-( as possible spelling variations in the nonstandard old French), meaning day. It originally referred to the daily talley of business reciepts or transactions, to keep track of inventory, expenditures, sales, and income. This term was also applied eventually to personal diaries, newspapers and other personal or business records which would be written in on a daily basis. French newspapers are still referred to as journals, as they serve to record the things which happen daily, and are published daily. It probably entered the English language with the Normans, which is when a good many other French words were adopted. Today, journal notes are usually associated with either a personal diary, or with research- where observations are recorded at least daily for a long period of time. These notes are then used as the basis for determining the validity of the experiment or observation, and to evaluate the overall process by making a permanent record of events, rather than depending on memory. A personal journal is really nothing more than a diary, though I suppose the inference is that it would contain more in depth personal comments than be merely a record of daily events. Journals entries would not necessarily be limited to recording news or social events of the day, but also ramblings and odd thoughts the person wished to record on any number of subjects. People are also requested by physicians to keep a journal to aid in diagnosis, as the patient is asked to record such things as what they ate and when, and what symptoms they noted- or what they were doing when a particular symptom appeared. People in therapy will often keep one to allow themselves or a therapist to evaluate progress. Regardless of their intended use, or purpose- the journal is still just a daily record of things meant to be useful in the longterm, as opposed to relying on memory alone.
