Does anyone know why people told fairy tales in the old days? Like... did they have a purpose, or were they just told? Are there any good websites to help me out?

I always thought they were morality tales.Serving a purpose by telling a story and giving warnings,as well as for entertainment.Not all were meant for children,some of those tales seem more geared for adults than children,rather disturbing subject matter.Of course watered down later for children.

Stories like faiy tales were told to keep children in line. Some were actually created by the children themselves. In the Era's they were created child abduction was commonplace.

They told them because television had not been invented and were verbal because in the day when they were the chief source of entertainment was for people who could not read as only people with a lot of money had the option of education. In later years it was aimed at prereaders.

Generally, they are stories from ancient pagan days. The characters and incidents should be taken as symbolic, rather than literal.
