At least $2500 USD (this is allowing for lack of work- for about two months, food, small emergencies, and a couple months rent), assuming that you only are looking to rent a room at this point, you can live very cheaply, and that it won't be too hard to find a job here.. being that you are a nurse (although you will have to be certified here and most likely start off as something a lot lower).

Good Luck!

P.S. Bring as many essentials as possible- stuff is expensive here, and look for a "furnished room"; preferably one with no deposit.

My best advice would be to line up a job before you come. Many hospitals will give you a signing bonus to cover the cost of getting set up in an apartment, etc.

If you come without a job, I would suggest bringing between $10-20,000.00 US. You will need money for an apartment, utilities, furniture, a car/transportation, etc. Things always end up costing more when you move than you think they will, and there are always unexpected expenses that come up.

I would ask other friends or family members who have come to the US how much they brought and if they thought it was sufficient.

Good luck!
