Maybe you should upgrade to 512 MB.

Increasing the RAM would help, but many times there are other factors.
How many programs start automatically when you boot?
Most machines load un necessary & unused stuff.
Check start>program files>startup.
Just drag and drop anything you don't use to another place on the start menu.
If you need it, it's still there and you can start it manually.
A lot of things that are not in the startup folder can be turned off using MSConfig.
Start>Run
type in msconfig
on the startup tab, uncheck things that you don't need to run at boot.
Also run a good antivirus scan and anti spyware scan in SAFE MODE (hit the F8 key after POST but before Windows starts to load).

Funny. I had a similar issue and found an interesting article on-line about start-up applications. My PC is running Windows XP SP2. AMD 2400 chip with 256 RAM. Amazingly the offending program was Norton and some of the start-up applications that I had running. In particular I am finding that the newer versions of Norton are quite intensive. Of course, check for spyware, viruses, etc...however if you have done all of this and your PC is still slow, consider checking out what applications are running at start-up. It is not for the faint of heart! You can run MSCONFIG (Start / Run) and check your start-up applications. You can also, press CTRL-ALT-DEL and check your processes. See what applications are using up resources. Below is information I got about offending applications, which you might find interesting. I found that it helped greatly in my situation.

One obvious cause is insufficient RAM 256 just isnt enough for Windows XP let alone other programs.

Also cut back on other programs starting / running when you open up. Only keep on your machine what you use regularly and dont have your hard disk any more full than you absolutely must.

Try a good spyware checker to I recommend Spyware Doctor.

apart from more RAM you could try scanning for spyware and/or other infections... Do you have a good virusscanner that scans for that kind of thing? If you do, that virusscanner itself could also be slowing things down... Check your settings and have it scan when necessary but not everything all the time...

yes increase your ram, i recommend no less than 512, for average speed, if you want, "blink and the page has changed" i suggest 1 gig or higher, (if your comp can handle it) usually they all can handle at least 2 gigs. ( 2 slots)

I would suggest that 256mb of ram is quite low .......it would pay you to increase the ram to at least 512mb .....i have a similar spec and have 2 gb of ram ......any increase in ram will give a noticeable increase in speed
