Bobby Charlton. He could hold play up when necessary,could pass the ball really well and scored goals (a lot of which were quite spectacular). He always seemed to have time on the ball and was never rushed. Above all he was a true sportsman and gentleman. I would have gone for Roy Keane but his temperament let him down. When a player admits he purposely went out to injure another player he loses all credibility and can never be regarded as great.Zidane's sending off in the world cup also ruled him out of picture. A man of his experience should have known better. Some of the players people have mentioned in their answers were not in fact midfield players although fine players in their own right and position.

Gerrard's the best mid-fielder. I hate to say this being a Man Utd fan but,obviously the Liverpool midfield is the best for at least in the EPL.

Steven Gerrard there is not a team that would not want to have him play for them. The most versatile modern midfielder without doubt. And he never gives up.

Ray Kennedy - Left Midfield
Graeme Souness - Centre Midfield
Terry McDermott - Centre Midfield
Steven Gerrard - Right Midfield.
I know you probably think I am biased towards Liverpool, but you cannot deny that that midfield would be utterly awesome.
