If the creaking sound comes from the metel -on- steel joint, are attempting losening the nuts and bolts, rub candle wax or daylight cleaning soap in the area then redo the bolts fairly relatively tight. It makes noise intent there may be motion on the joint, so get any person strong to do the tightening, keep retightening each few months

Try greasing it with bike grease. Rub some on a cotton ball and apply to the creaking areas.

Grease and WD40 are not a good idea for your bed - they are too oily and will stain the mattress and bed linen. Try spraying it with furniture polish - I use it on all my door hinges and it works a treat.

I had this awful problem at uni! I put black tape on the bits that rubbed and this helped but it looked awful! If you want to get naughty I recommend putting the mattress on the floor!!
