A few days ago the Press released a news clipping about dropping gas prices coming just in time to assist businesses gearing up for the next busy Christmas season, only really about a month away. These falling gas prices will now supply consumers with extra cash for the gift giving season ahead. Well here is where the reality surfaces, the November elections, and the false front of the extra cash for Christmas is used to make us think the Saudis are doing us a favour when in fact it is helping the Republicans and George Bush to plug their views in order to get more of their side voted into office. Falling gas prices make us think everything is good with the world when in fact it is just a moment in time being used until this election stuff is over with. I used the term double entendra which implies two intended meanings. Do you know of another name for this sort of technique?

I think you're right, Paul, about the Bush administration using this ploy to distract the voters from the real issues. I think the gas shortages of a few months ago (with the incredibly high prices) were created by the administration, so they could then drastically lower gas prices a few months before the election and look like "heroes."

A double entendre (with an "e" at the end, not an "a") could also be referred to as an equivocation. In this case, it's just dirty politics.

double entendre is wrong - that usually implies a 2nd sexual meaning.

I think there may be *something* in what you suggest but even though I don't trust the powers that be an inch I still think the word you're looking for is 'paranoid'

edit for spelling and: 'conspiracy' - which basically amounts to the same thing.

I'm no fan of the Bush administration, but if I find it hard to believe it's an evil plot whenever gas prices go up ... and an evil plot whenever they go down. That's called 'economics'.

If I could understand the technique you are describing I might be able to come up with a name for it. So I guess the answer is no.

Did you mean double entendre?
