How many digits did the printer use in numbering the pages of the book?

Pages 1-9 --> 9 pages x 1 digit = 9 digits
Pages 10-99 --> 90 pages x 2 digits = 180 digits
Pages 100-250 --> 151 pages x 3 digits = 453 digits

Note, the number of pages between a and b is b - a + 1. Be sure to correctly count 100 to 250 as *151* pages, not 150. You can always double-check by adding up the number of pages (9 + 90 + 151) to make sure you counted 250 pages total.

Anyway, the total number of digits is:
9 + 180 + 453 = 642 digits

Another way to do this is to assume 3 digits per page, but subtract for the pages that have less.
3 x 250 = 750

But 9 pages have 2 less digits (18)
And 90 pages have 1 less digit (90)

So the number of digits would be 750 - 18 - 90 = 642 digits.

Either way you have the right answer.

I guess the others are correct, but one interpretation of "how many digits" is 10 digits. The digits: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and 0 were used in various combinations to number all the pages.
Of course, pages 100 through 250 means 151 pages with 3 digit numbers on them for 453 digits plus 90 more (pp 10 through 99) two digit pages for 180 more digits equals 633 plus digits 1 through 9 for pp 1 through 9 equals 642 digits used.

There are 250 entire pages. because of the fact the 1st ninety 9 in trouble-free terms have 2 digits, in trouble-free terms 151 have 3 meaning 151*3=453 digits to date. Of the relax ninety 9, in trouble-free terms ninety have 2 digits (ninety*2=one hundred eighty) The final 9 have a million digit each: 9*a million=9 upload the three solutions:9+one hundred eighty+453=642 b is the final answer
