Would you rather hear Bono go solo with a bunch of hired session musicians - or would you rather hear Adam and the Edge do a side project or two (a TV or movie soundtrack, for example, or a song or two)?
As far as side projects are concerned, I think Adam and/or Edge have the chops for it.
Bono is a great vocalist, but U2 has always been a unified quartet with remarkable musical chemistry. It’s not Bono and Friends, or Bono & the Band. However, if Bono were to do a solo project, I’m sure he’d do it for a good cause, or he’d do it to stretch his boundaries as an artist.

I think that he is too dedicated to the other band members to just leave them. Maybe only for a song or two.
