The winners of all six divisions are in. The next best record in each of the two leagues (National & American) are in as the wild card. This means 8 teams make the playoffs. In each league the wild card team plays the team with the best record in their league, so long as they are not in the same division. Teams in the same division cannot play against each other in the first round.

American League - New York Yankees have won their division, and Oakland is a near certainty (Los Angeles Angels not yet mathematically eliminated). Detroit and Minnesota will both make the playoffs, one as the Central Division champion, the other as the wild card.

National League - New York Mets have won their division. St. Louis and San Diego lead their divisions but haven't clinched. Houston and Cincinnati have a chance to catch St Louis, Los Angeles Dodgers have a chance to catch San Diego. The Mets and 3 of those 5 other teams will qualify for the playoffs - the division winners and 1 wild card.
