Spanish speaking people that live here need to learn English, instead of relying on other people to translate for them. What are your thoughts?

I agree they should understand the need to learn English but it will take time. And in the meantime we could be good neighbors about it.
Engish is very complex in that it borrows from so many other languages.
Here are a few oddities of Englisch.

thought and though and through very similar spellings and yet the vowels in each have a totally different sound. Strange, people, very strange.

My ancestors came from Germany in 1732 and had to learn English to do business with the Englischers. My Scottish ancestors came in 1743 and also had to learn Englische but they didn't do it overnight, it took awhile.

Failing to learn the language of the nation you live in creates a barrier or entry for you into society. You are at the mercy of those who are willing to speak to you on your term, usually those who need or want something from you. You will allways be under valued by that society and you will allways be viewed as a foreigner reguardless of your legal status. I can't imagine Spanish speaking people don't realize this, they just have other priorities.

sure, it would just be easier for them to function in our society that way. but you have to remember that english is a difficult language that cant be learned overnight. it takes 4 years to be fluent in a language. so even if they all work on learning english, there are still going to be people speaking spanish until they learn it.

Right on. They should at least be trying to learn English. How can they drive and read road signs? It would be just like a person who can't read getting a driver's license.

Plus every other culture here in the past has learned English and it seems like asians and europeans expect to learn English. Mexicans think we should conform to them.

If I moved to France I'd try hard to learn French but to expect others to be immediately fluent in another language is a bit too much.
There is nothing wrong with your country showing a bit of tolerance and respect to immigrants.
I doubt there are many who would refuse point blank to learn English.... it is a hard language to learn and maybe they aren't confident.
