First off, if you are 3 centimeters, you are in labor. However, you are not ready to deliver. Second off, 50% effaced means that the layer of sac holding the baby has thinned out half way, you usually have to be to at least 80% to 90% for your water to break, or for the layer to break open, that normally happened, when the baby has moved into the birth canal, and is pushing to get out, then your contractions will increase.
There are many things to consider. First has the baby dropped, like does it feel like they are sitting lower, Second, is this your first baby? If so, I can tell you from working in Labor and Delivery for 3 years, before moving to the Mother/Baby unit at the hospital that I work at, that most likely it will be a week. You are not that far off, but you have a little longer to go. When the contractions start to get to 10 minutes or less, than I would call your doctor.

Ohhhh believe me, this dilemma drove me CRAZY when I was pregnant! I know this will never be what you want to hear, but:
My friend was dilated at 3 and 50% effaced for 3 weeks before she went into labor!
Sorry, I don't want to discourage you, but every pregnancy is different for everyone. Just remember this: You will know when it happens...just RELAX about it. I let the worry and suspense really get the best of me, and suffered terribly for it!
Best wishes!

Usually, first baby takes several hours of labor. But 3 centimeters is near to labor already. You have to walk and walk to exercise yourself. You may feel contractions often by this time. If you feel contractions in few seconds intervals, then you are very near to giving birth.

Believe me, you will feel it when it is coming. If you have had any pre-contractions it will feel like those. Except you will start to feel them in sequence, like every 5 minutes. When that starts to happen you will know that labor is near. Good luck:)

It could be in several hours--or not for several days. Pregnancy is an inexact science.
If you are really curious ask for a complete Bishop's score from your practitioner....but recognize that there are no guarantees.
Best of luck and congratulations!

When you see your baby's head popping out of you and when hes asking why is every one up side down, that is the time!!!
just kidding, Just asked your doctor for the "tell tell " signs of labor. If you already asked him and he dint really answer your question, let him know!
Tell the human butcher " hey you s.o.b! you dint answer my question, make it clear for me!" Just don't use those exact words.
