That is a good question, and not easy to answer. Labour Governments, because they are ideologically to the 'Left' and skirting with Communism are suspicious and fearful of the Police and the Armed Forces. Under our Constitution, the Armed Forces and the Police, technically, report to the Monarch of the day. IE, Her Majesty's Forces. A prisoner, is said to be detained at her Majesty's pleasure. The reason we have this arrangement, is that, if a rogue Government with a large majority starts to abuse its powers, say, by trying to undermine Democracy and behaving unconstitutionally, possibly by trying to take absolute power by not calling an election when required, then reserve powers can be brought to bear.
In such circumstances, the Crown, has the right to require the removal of the Government; obviously the loyalty and support of the Armed Forces and the Police will be required.
So, a Labour Government with Totalitarian intentions, will want to reduce the power of the Armed Forces, but, at the same time increase the power of the Police. The Police force, however, will have been changed from its traditional role to one where its priority is to support left wing ideology, eg, Political Correctness, the undermining of Capitalism and Democracy, and a huge increase in State Control and, to use a euphemism, nannying.
Traditionally, the Armed Forces and the Police are seen by the 'LEFT' as primarily instruments of the 'RIGHT'. Hitler, came to power in a Democratic Germany, but he was supported by the Armed Forces and the Police in a right wing Millitary take-over. This took a long period of time, however.Of course, they were known as, The Nazis'.
Before these takeover events can occur, the plotters, particularly from the 'Left', need a long time to indoctrinate the people and change a country's political structure. This is always carried out covertly, and usually in the guise of achieving a more plausible and innocent objective.
A 'Left-Wing' coup, will be a long incremental process. The Armed Forces will be whittled down over time, soldiers will be subjected to civilian law as a means of underminig moral. These processes will be aided and abetted by the Left-Wing media, particularly, the TV media. Various other ways will be found to condition the people into thinking that they are supporting something good and worthwhile for the country. People, are surprisingly easy to indocrinate. Left-Wing Teachers and Lecturers also play their part.
Left-Wing coups are achieved by stealth, not usually by bloodshed. The reason for this, is that, they are instigated and driven by Left-Wing intellectuals. They are clever enough, perhaps I should say, 'devious enough', to have apparently plausible explanations to convince ordinary people that what they are doing is for their own good. HAVE I RUNG ANY BELLS?
Of course, in our case, the EU will supplant our Armed Forces and Police. So, the takeover will not be National, but EURO SUPRA_NATIONAL.

This government is probably less representative of the people of this country than any other in recent history. The last election was won due the pathetic state of the (so called) Conservative Party, not the popular appeal of the Labour Party. In order to extend their power, they have pre-empted opposition to their high-tax, high-spend(waste) policies by attacking the institutions of this country. These have included the House of Lords, the Royal Family and the office of the Lord Chancellor.
Political control of the police and security services has left the Armed Services (at the direction of the Head of State) as the only remaining guarantor of HM Subjects' liberty.
By cuts, inefficient expenditure and deployment of HM Forces in illegal campaigns, combatants are kept away from the UK mainland while they are demoralised and their numbers reduced.

The Tories did a pretty good job of butchering the military. If it hadn't been for the Falklands (which Mrs. T was negotiating away) your army would consist of the SAS & a few ceremonial troops for Buck Palace

It's the same in america, brother... The labor governments are themselves governed by the acquisition of wealth and the military costs money. The two simply cannot co-exist under that form of government.
