William Tecumseh Sherman- he was living in south Texas where the climate is generally hot and dry but is often punctuated by periods of torrential tropical rains and dramatic drops in temperature well below freezing. The soil is about as hospitable as the climate, varying from caliche to black clay or silty sands.
