I like to use a 4-3 defense with a QB spy.

This (usually) helps to break up runs up the middle, and if I can tell early on that they're passing, I drop the spying LB back a bit and keep my eyes open for receivers around the 10 yard mark in the middle of the field.

Like any defensive play, it won't work in EVERY situation, but I find it works pretty well when playing against my buddy.

The best Defense is always pressure!
If he is running PA then blitz the piss out of him... zone blitzing out of the nickle 1-5-5 works good if he is passing to his running backs. Also if he is doing PA Jam his wide recievers at the line and he's gonna getting sacked alot. Sooner or later he is going to stop with all the play action. I always laugh online when someone runs play action on me... I know i'll be getting at least 5 sacks that game ... sure he may throw a big bomb on you a drive or 2 but in the long run all that PA is going to be giving him 3rd and 20 instead of 3rd and 3.
And i see you also said he was a scrambler.... here is a good way to make him regret all that BS scrambling .. pick the Dime defense and look for any play where both corners come on the blitz. most of the time those scramblers end out running right into them from the blind side. Make sure you press the coverage tight too to ensure minimum time on the corner blitz. If you are worried about open recievers then take your D end and drop him into coverage right before the snap... With fast D ends like Kearse you can easily cover any route that is within 15 yds from the line of scrimmage.
