That would be fine if your going to ride just around your area, but if your planning on going on long rides of 200+ miles I would consider getting a bigger bike to where you'll stretch out more. I'm 6' and 190lbs and even with 200 miles on a rebel I would be a little sore. Highway pegs does wonders on long rides.

Yes...and ...No
It depends really on what your plan for the bike is. I am 5'9 180 and owned a rebel in 04. I rode it for about two months to get some experience, and sold it after approx 800 miles for just what i paid for it. For a bike to get experience on it is great. For a first bike it is good. It is not a highway bike-It can do it, but it is light. I always felt that the front wheel was about to pop up at anything over 45mph.
I moved up this year (after nothing last year) to a 750 shadow ace. that to is a nice bike and one that if you are not a total newb, could handle fine.
Take a rider MSF class.

It might do, but isn't quite big enough. I'm 6'2" 205 and I rode a rebel for my MSF class. My wife said I looked pretty silly on such a small bike. It also felt pretty small and uncomfortable.
I was considering one for my first bike since they are cheap and easy to handle. Then I rode it and decided it wasn't much more than the moped I used to have.

Go a little bigger. If you like Honda, try the 750 shadow, it's a good bike. Better yet, look for a used 650 Nighthawk, that's a great bike. I owned one for years.

It will absolutely get you where you want to go, just not very quickly. That's not so bad for a first bike though. I am your size and have ridden one (but don't tell anyone, I'm a Harley owner) and it was comfortable enough. I'm sure you will have a great time with it. Good luck, and always ride safely :-)

Get something bigger like a Yamaha V-star 650. You will outgrown the Rebel and crave a bigger bike.
